nursing during pregnancy - preventing nipple pain

If you're still nursing your older baby or toddler during your pregnancy, you've probably heard other Mothers say that they experienced nipple pain. While it doesn't happen to every Mom, it is common. Here are some tips for preventing nipple pain and treating it if it's a problem during your pregnancy.

Make sure the child is in a good position with the correct latch, always important while breastfeeding. It's easy to be lax and get into bad habits with an older baby or toddler. Don't let your older baby wiggle around or do "Gymnursetics" and pull on your breast. Try alternate positions until you find one that is comfortable for both of you. If it does not stop your nipple pain at least you have eliminated one reason for it.

It's important to stay hydrated as well. Try carrying around a large glass with you or using flavored ice cubes if you have a hard time drinking enough water. Many Moms have noted that drinking water was especially important if they were nursing through a pregnancy.

Some Moms notice that their nipples are dry during pregnancy. You may want to try Lansinoh, a topical treatment, that is used to help sore nipples. This organic nipple butter may help also.

Keep in mind that your hormonal changes may make the nipple pain unavoidable. The pain may cause you to want to wean or cut down on nursing. Some Moms have had good success with talking to their toddler about the situation, and nursing for shorter periods of time. Breastfeeding isn't an all or nothing proposition and your toddler is at an age where he can start learning about Mommy's needs too.
