decreased milk supply
at night
Many Moms find that they seem to
have a decreased milk supply at night. Moms who pump exclusively
find that this is the case also, so it may be a fairly universal
phenomenon. Our bodies simply make more milk in the mornings when
we've had a good night's sleep.
If you're having trouble with a decreased
supply at night, if at all possible, try taking a nap in the
afternoon. Many women find that their supply gets a boost after a
period of rest.
Some babies simply want to nurse more
frequently in the evenings and you may interpret this as reduced
supply. This may be the case, but sometimes this is a reaction to
the "busy-ness" of the evening time. Mom is rushing around
preparing dinner, getting the older kid's homework and chores
completed, Dad's coming home and there is a lot of excitement and
stress too. Everyone is tired and this time of day is often
referred to as "the witching hour".
Baby may be nursing more because he wants to
get your attention. Perhaps the best thing for him and you is to
sit down, take a deep breath and nurse! The more you breastfeed,
the more milk your body makes.
Be sure that you haven't been too busy all
day to take time to eat properly and drink water. Perhaps having a
nice big glass of water and a nutritious snack with some protein
before this time of day will help. Some Moms like to drink a cup or
two of herbal tea designed to boost the milk supply, such as the
organic MilkMaid
Tea. Try it and see if it works for you.
